The Arena Das Dunas is a new stadium located in the city of Natal in the Rio Grande de Norto state in Brazil. The stadium was built specifically to host matches during the 2014 Football World Cup, where it will be the venue for four group stage fixtures.
The Arena das Dunas replaces the Machadao Stadium which previously serviced the city of Natal. The Machadao was demolished in 2011 with construction of the Arena Das Dunas commencing the same year. The stadium was designed by renowned architecture firm, Populous.
The Arena das Dunas has a number of unusual design features. The overall shape was inspired by the sand dunes around the city, while the roof sections represent separate petals, which are spaced to permit breezes to ventilate the stadium.
The stadium is one of the smaller venues that will be used at the World Cup, with permanent seating for 33,000 people and another 10,000 to be added for the duration of the 2014 Football World Cup.
