The Estadio Beira-Rio is located in Porto Allegre, Brazil. The stadium is the home of local football club, Sport Club Internacional. A major refurbishment of the stadium was required in order for it to host matches during the World Cup, and the Estadio Beira Rio will host five fixtures during the 2014 Football World Cup, including four group stage matches and a Round of 16 fixture.
The Estadio Beira-Rio has been in operation since 1969, following a decade long construction project. The stadium remained largely unchanged until Brazil won its bid to host the 2014 Football World Cup, following which the venue was scheduled for a refurbishment.
This included rebuilding the lower tier of seats at the stadium, rebuilding the stadium shell and constructing a roof. The stadium’s new capacity has been decreased as a result of renovations, and the venue will seat 51,300 spectators for World Cup matches.
