The Estadio Castelao, also known as the Gigante de Boa Vista, is a stadium located in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. Opened in 1973, the stadium underwent significant renovations for the 2014 Football World Cup, and will host matches in the tournament group stage, Round of 16 and quarterfinals.
The Estadio Castelao was constructed over a period of four years between 1969 and 1973. The venue underwent refurbishment and structural reinforcement between 2000 and 2001 before being extensively refurbished between 2011 and 2012 in preparation for the World Cup.
Upgrades, which cost approximately £155m, included the installation of a new roof, underground parking and conversion into an all-seater bowl with the construction of a new lower tier. The Castelao was the first World Cup host stadium to reach tournament readiness.
