The Estadio Mineirao is located in the city of Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In 2012 renovations of the stadium were completed, preparing it for the 2014 Football World Cup. The Mineirao (as it is known by locals) will host four group stage games at the World Cup, along with a round of 16 fixture and a semifinal.
Construction of the Estadio Mineirao began in 1959, and over the next five years the stadium was assembled as the participating architects and engineers overcame multiple obstacles to its construction. The stadium was inaugurated in 1965, and was considered the most advanced stadium in Brazil at the time.
The Estadio Mineirao stadium was constructed to such high standards that its refurbishment for the 2014 World Cup was the first major one in its history. The roof of the stadium was enhanced and extended, the pitch was lowered, and the bottom tier of seating was demolished and rebuilt, creating all-seater capacity.
